Nigel Heron - Shipwright

This month we say hello and goodbye to one of our particularly talented shipwrights, Nigel Heron. After a commendable 27 years at Fox’s, Nigel will be retiring in less than two weeks time, so we couldn’t let him go without a special mention.

Nigel has been an integral part of the Fox’s team for nearly three decades, mainly involved in the woodworking and joinery side of the business. Having trained at Whisstock’s Boatyard in Woodbridge at the tail end of their traditional timber yacht building days, he is a true craftsman and many Fox’s clients have benefitted from his dedication to the art of traditional boat building and restoration. Nigel speaks fondly of customers over the years, particularly those who have taken a personal interest in these skills and processes.

When asked what he enjoys about his job most, Nigel replies “teak deck refurbishment or replacement, it’s so visually satisfying transforming a neglected, lack-lustre deck”. Having said that he is now looking forward to giving his poor knees a rest after many years crouched on a deck!

So, what does retirement hold for Nigel? Apart from wanting to get up slightly later than his usual 5.30am start, he is an avid walker and plans to explore more of Suffolk, particularly coastal routes so he can indulge his love of water and boats at the same time.

We wish Nigel the best of luck for his retirement and thank him for all his dedication and hard work over the years, he will be greatly missed.
