Malcolm Westmoreland

After fighting a courageous battle against a brain tumour, Malcolm Westmoreland passed away on 19 December 2013.

Born in 1948 in Southend-on-Sea, boats and the sea were key to Malcolm’s passions. At the age of 12, Malcolm started on the leisure boat, Dreadnought, and graduated through cockleboats from Leigh-on-Sea, to the dredger Pittlewell.

In 1966, he gained a Master’s certificate in the Merchant Navy, before retuning ashore to become Marina Manager of Essex Marina at Wallasea, where he met his life partner Cherril.

Malcolm’s involvement with Fox’s Marina began when he was appointed General Manager, whilst the company was still owned by Eastern tractors and based at the original site off the Wherstead Road. Once the business had relocated to the current site, Malcolm became Managing Director and was instrumental in its development and gradual expansion. In 1985, Oyster Marine became involved, keen to help develop the business in conjunction with its own requirements.

Malcolm had a natural talent for business and in particular marinas. He had a good head for figures, was always keen to try new things and coupled with his passion for boats, helped develop what started as a few pontoons and a single shed, into much of the Fox’s site we have today, with its various specialist departments.

He became respected within the industry for both his involvement at Fox’s and latterly his other marina development projects and consultancy work.

Always a keen yachtsman and respected fisherman, Malcolm was also a keen golfer and loved tinkering with the many cars he owned. He developed many friends on and off the water and was always working at bringing people together, often being key to developing ideas such as Fox’s Marina Yacht Club.

Malcolm had a special twinkle in his eye and a ready sense of humour – he will always be remembered with respect and affection by his many friends and colleagues.
