The Mighty Scorpio at the Panerai British Classics Regatta

Prepared, outfitted, rigged and commissioned by Fox’s Marina & Boatyard, who also installed a new engine, Scorpio, the Matthews’ family Stella, was the outstanding small yacht in last week’s Panerai British Classic Week Regatta, held in Cowes 9-15 July.

Sailed by Richard Matthews, with a crew that included Olympic Gold Medalist and ISAF Sailor of the Year, Saskia Clark, Scorpio scored a second and five firsts in the small boat class.

More impressive was an overall win on the long course, 45-mile race around the Nab Tower followed by an upwind leg to Yarmouth, during which the wind freshened to 25 gusting 28 knots forcing the retirement of more than half the 30 boat fleet. Standing waves whipped up by a three knot spring tide made a small boat win all the more remarkable.

In addition to trophies for her class and overall win, given the extreme conditions, Scorpio was also awarded a special prize presented by Spirit Yachts, for the crew most in need of a stiff drink!
