Team Fox’s takes part in the Fox’s Yacht Club Two Rivers Race 2016
Fox’s MD, Will Taylor-Jones, took the helm of Simon Whitehouse’s Mount Gay 30 Wildwood, during the recent annual Fox’s Yacht Club Two Rivers Race, skippering the boat to a respectable 2nd place in the 16 boat fleet, which included competitors from the Royal Harwich Yacht Club and Royal Navy Sailing Association.
This fun event involves yachts navigating around a series of waypoints in the Rivers Orwell and Stour, most of which involve a drinking establishment, with a designated rower/runner going ashore, downing a drink and collecting a token, before returning to their yacht. Boat handling and seamanship skills are tested with tenders and crews being dropped and collected under sail, as close to the landing points as possible, before racing on to the next mark.
Wildwood was very much a ‘Team Fox’s’ entry with nominated rower/runner John Spear – Fox’s Rigging Supervisor doing a great job, despite having to tame the experimental ‘tender’ designed and built by Simon just days before the event! Mike Laker – Fox’s Rigging Technical Manager and Olly Patten – Fox’s Workshop Supervisor, provided the sailing skills and muscle.
Wildwood was originally conceived and built to the Whitbread 30 box rule producing light weight, offshore capable, water ballasted 30 footers that became popular in the late 1990’s. Will was particularly delighted to be helming Wildwood again having originally built the boat in 1997 and last raced the boat seriously in the 1999 Fastnet Race
As a really fun day afloat and ashore, with growing support from key sponsors, next year’s Fox’s Two Rivers event promises to be even more popular – make sure you put it in the diary!
